The earliest church records begin
in 1933 and some of these records are not complete.
However, it is known that The Highland Avenue
Baptist Tabernacle had its beginning in 1911as
The West Side Mission of The First Baptist Church
of Newport, KY. Five locations have housed the
congregation: 327 W. Sixth Street, Newport, KY,
1911 ; 7' & Brighton Street, Newport, KY, 1913; 8'
& Brighton Street, Newport, KY, 1914 (a wooden tabernacle
was added in 1915); 7' & Putnarn Street, Newport,
KY, 1950; and 1080 Highland Avenue, Ft. Thomas,
KY, 1976-Present.
The Tabernacle has supported missionaries throughout
its history in North America, South America, Asia,
Australia, Europe, and Africa. Many members of
The Tabernacle have gone on to become pastors
and/or missionaries and have served in this church
and other churches. Two missions have been
located in Cincinnati, OH and Newport, KY. Mt.
Adarns of Cincinnati, OH began in 1935 and
5' & York Streets of Newport, KY began in 1940.
The church has had four names. West Side Mission
of The First Baptist Church of Newport, Brighton
Street Baptist Church, Newport Baptist Tabernacle,
and Highland Avenue Baptist Tabernacle.
The Lord's many blessings have taken the form
of 13 pastors and 2 assistant pastors. Harry Drake
1919), Arthur Pope (1919), O.J. Steger (1920-?),
Otis Seller (1928-?), George Bates (1930-?), John
Green (1932-33), Walburn D. Salyers (1934-38), Earl
E. Sexton (1938-39), Harmon Eggleston (1939-8l), Jack
Holmes (1981 -84), Ray Shepherd (1985-1993), John
Harrison, Sr. (1993-2000), David Simpson (2001 - Present). While
space or records don't allow the listing of every pastor/speaker
that has filled the pulpit at this church, we
have been blessed by many.
The Highland Avenue Baptist Tabernacle seeks
to fulfill the great commission of going, seeking,
telling, and bringing individuals to the Lord.
Evangelism Explosion is an outreach ministry and
excitement can be felt throughout the membership
of the church. Many have been visited
and witnessed to and have accepted the freely
given grace of our Lord and Saviour.
The only way to predict our church's future
is by our past. We have a rich history of serving
the Lord and we are committed to His service!
